In my opinion this analysis by Ben Thompson is spot on as well:

He’s basically arguing that an encrypted messenger platform is an additional "privacy cake that Facebook can have — and eat it“ because given their other platforms and the metadata from this new service they won’t have to change their business model significantly.

At the same time it’s a massive opportunity to grow and cement their dominance.
